The phase verified in 2026
In January 2026, City Hall began a 30-day test with a fully electric bus on Conexão BRT route 28, between Pingo D’Água and Terminal Curral Falso. The stated goal was to evaluate real-world performance and inform future procurement.
Other manufacturers could participate in the demonstration cycle. This characterizes a technological testing phase, not a large-scale purchasing decision.
Why infrastructure is part of the bus
The autonomy announced by a manufacturer is not enough. Consumption changes with capacity, terrain, speed, air conditioning and temperature. Garages need electrical connection, chargers, security, space and strategy to not remove too many vehicles at the same time.
In May, City Hall announced a partnership with C40 and GCoM to study the modernization of RIO System terminals, including recharging infrastructure and technical, economic and legal models. The diagnosis was presented in preparation for gradual electrification.
What to watch from now on
A verifiable policy must inform energy consumed per kilometer, availability, failures, real autonomy, total cost, avoided emissions and adaptation of lines. You also need to say who pays for the battery, recharging and replacement throughout the contract.
| Phase | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Demo | Vehicle tested for a limited period. |
| Operational pilot | Small fleet with goals and published evaluation. |
| Contracted infrastructure | Energy and recharge with a defined schedule. |
| Acquisition or concession | Quantity, lines and contractual obligations. |
| Operation at scale | Electric fleet providing regular and monitored service. |
