What changed in June 2026
City Hall set June 28, 2026 as the start of cashless operation on municipal buses. PIX was expanded across the fleet, while contactless payments entered testing and gradual rollout.
Money can still be used to buy or top up cards at authorized points. The change refers to payment directly inside the vehicle.
Paying a fare is not the same as receiving an integration benefit
The single-use green card, PIX, or another one-time payment method can pay for a trip, but does not necessarily provide the benefits of Bilhete Único Carioca or Bilhete Único Margaridas. City Hall links these integrations to the black Jaé card or the QR code of an identified account.
| Method | Main use | Attention |
|---|---|---|
| Jaé black / identified account | Payment, transportation vouchers and benefits linked to the CPF. | Check registration and benefit rules. |
| Jaé single-use green card | Payment without account association. | Does not include all subsidized transfers. |
| QR Code Jaé | Board via digital account. | It depends on your cell phone, balance and how the application works. |
| PIX in the validator | Single-fare payment when boarding. | Transaction times and connectivity may vary. |
| Contact card | Single-fare payment where enabled. | Availability must be confirmed at the vehicle or station. |
Municipal, metropolitan and metro integration
The SMTR page states that Jaé is intended for municipal transport and can also be used on MetrôRio under specific conditions. The metro–BRT integration, for example, is restricted to Jardim Oceânico and Vicente de Carvalho stations and has a specific fare.
BUM covers municipal trips from Terminal BRT Metropolitano Pedro Fernandes under its own rules. Bilhete Único Intermunicipal follows state policy and requires cooperation between systems. Before a complex trip, confirm the current rule and required card type.
